Oncolytics Biotech Inc. is a biotechnology company. The Company is engaged in developing pelareorep, an intravenously delivered immunotherapeutic agent that activates the innate and adaptive immune systems and weakens tumor defense mechanisms. It improves the ability of the immune system to fight cancer, making tumors susceptible to a range of oncology treatments. The Company is conducting clinical trials evaluating pelareorep in combination with checkpoint inhibitors and targeted therapies in solid and hematological malignancies. Pelareorep’s anti-tumor activity is based on three modes: selective viral replication in permissive cancer cells, which leads to tumor cell lysis; activation of innate immunity in response to the infection, which results in a cascade of chemokines/cytokines, causing natural killer (NK) cells to be activated and attack cancer cells; and specific adaptive immune response triggered by tumor and viral-associated antigens displayed by antigen presenting cells.
